White Lies
Gig Of The Week 1: Underage Club @ Scala

Oh, to be young again! Under 18 special featuring some of 2008′s best artists, and some great picks for the coming year. Headlining are the excellent White Lies, who have to be the favourite in the recent BBC Sound of 2009 longlist. Backing them are the immense Metronomy, currently riding high in the cumulative Best of 2008 charts. Also on the bill are the great live act Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, whilst the eclectic mix is topped off with Rolo Tomassi. Head down to Scala early on Saturday as things kick off at around 2pm, if you’re young enough that is.

White Lies – Death

Metronomy – A Thing For Me

Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip – The Beat That My Heart Skipped

Golden Silvers – Magic Touch

Laura Marling
Gig Of The Week 2: Fee Fie Foe Fum @ Cargo

Fantastic folky sorts populate Cargo on Tuesday as Laura Marling headlines a strong line up including Jay Jay Pistolet and Johnny Flynn, in celebration of the Fee Fie Foe Fum tour, which many of the artists present took to the USA earlier this year. Somewhat unsurprisingly due to Marling’s ever-growing popularity this is well sold out. But – if you have a chance to pick up spares by hook or crook this could be one of the last great shows of 2008.

Gig Of The Week – Vivian Girls – Brixton Windmill

Brooklyn’s Vivian Girls have had a whirlwind 2008. Recently named in Rough Trade’s 50 albums of 2008 (#9, no less), the band follows support slots with Deerhunter, Fucked Up and Love is All over in the States with a couple of shows here in London. The first is the peach, set in the dark, cramped surroundings of Brixton’s tiny Windmill venue. The sound is resolutely lo-fi, with hints of Sarah Records influence along with classic girl group vs Jesus And Mary Chain noise. So ignore the glitzy XFM bash up the road at the Academy and go and head for Brooklyn in Brixton.

Gig Of The Week: Release The Bats

All Tomorrow Parties host the Hallow’een bash to end them all over two nights at Kentish Town’s Forum. Headlined by Steve Albini’s blistering Shellac, the undercard provides almost as much interest with Brooklyn’s post-punkers Les Savy Fav, noisebastards Lightning Bolt and the excellent Wooden Shjips leading the way. Expect a no-limits party atmosphere, along with some audacious fancy-dressing!

Shellac – Ghosts
Les Savy Fav – Who Rocks The Party
Wooden Shjips – Losin’ Time

Album of the week is Martha Wainwright’s I Know You’re Married But I Have Feelings Too. I gave the record it’s first spin last night out in the back yard, eating some yummy BBQ. It’s a much more mature album than her debut, and more stylistically diverse all held together by that great voice.

A long awaited release, and this weeks runners-up are hip-pop duo Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip. Hugely demonstrating to their doubters that last year’s Thou Shalt Always Kill was no flash in the pan, this is a record full of intelligent rhymes, deft beats and plenty of humour. A fantastic full length debut, only beaten into second place by a Scroobius Pip beard-hair’s breadth. The title track is a particular treat.

Also in the running for album of the week was Campbell & Lanegan’s second collaboration, Sunday At Devil Dirt. Deciding that the formula of 2006′s Mercury-nominated Ballad Of The Broken Seas was too good to break, the second LP is much the same. However, it is no less intriguing or satisfying. A rootsy, bluesy, cracked record full of songs about love and loss.

Death Cab For Cutie release their second major-label LP, Narrow Stairs this week. The band claim the record to be wildly different to previous outings, a dangerous game to play when your last record was so critically acclaimed. Pendulum also try and follow up a massive success with In Silico. Flight Of The Conchords follow their cult TV hit with an album of their fun folk songs that made the series.

MP3: L.E.S. Artistes

Three great singers, three new albums. The most hyped of the bunch is Philadelphia’s Santi White, aka Santogold. Her debut, self-titled album has been preceded by storming single L.E.S. Artistes. I hope the album follows that track more than her contribution to Mark Ronson’s Version, I found her vocals on Pretty Green really annoying.  The other two hae been relatively quite since their nominations for the Mercury Prize in the early 2000s. Both those albums, Quixotic and Night On My Side, were a complete treat. Having heard several tracks on Jools Holland recently, The Blue God isn’t as hot. Hayes’ form since her debut has been patchy too, but I haven’t heard The Hollow Of Morning.

Finally, amongst the featued releases are three diverse albums from three diverse artists. Adem presents an album of covers as his third LP, featuring tracks by artists who inspired the Fridge bassist. The Black Angels’ second LP, Directions To See A Ghost is an unexpected treat. Picking up good reviews in most places is The Shortwave Set’s Replica Sun Machine, so that finds it’s way into this list.

Also out this week are the following: Duels – The Barbarians Move In, Cut Copy – In Ghost Colours, Wiley – Grime Wave, Drive By Argument – S/T, Matmos – Supreme Balloon, Shout Out Louds – Our Ill Wills, Stapleton – Rest And Be Thankful. Truly a bumper week.

Last week’s top 3 as voted by the readers were:

Estelle – American Boy
Possibly the only time you will find the current number one residing on WoW. A great tune from Estelle, although I’m not sure its as good as 1980, her previous hit single from a couple of years back. It is good though.

Timabland – Way I Are
Despite frankly awful grammar, Timbaland manages to squirm his way through a simply brilliant tune. A slinky bassline and some sulky-sounding flow make this tune difficult to dislodge from the section of my brain labelled ‘catchy’.

Holy Fuck – Royal Gregory
I’ll admit, it’s the profanity laden name that drew me in. I’m a sucker for the f-word. Just ask the football team I play with on Wednesdays, this week saw another full volume tourette-style spewing forth of the beloved four letter exagerrator following a disgraceful defensive lapse leaving me on my arse and the ball rolling slowly goal bound. The tune on the other hand is a Hot Chip-esque stompfest, at turns melodic and listless. The rest of their eponymous debut is worth a listen, too.

Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip – Fixed
Do you like UK hip-hop? You shouldn’t it’s fucking rubbish… So readeth the gospel according Stanford-le-Hope’s premier poet Scroobius Pip, backed up by his beat-belching buddy Dan Le Sac. This track formed one of the highlights of their set last week at 21 South Street, Reading. Formed of a diatribe against the paucity of quality in UK hip-hop (more pop hits than art) laid over the spanking beats of Dizzee Rascal’s Fix Up Look Sharp. Their long-awaited debut Angles is out in May and becomes one of my most anticipated releases of 2008, out on Sunday Best.

Clinic – The Witch (Made To Measure)
Beserk single from Clinic’s recent LP, Do It!  Went down a treat at their 229 Club gig this week, where the Scouse band really plunged the knife into my agony over Tuesday’s football result by striding on to You’ll Never Walk Alone. After having forgiven them for that, they then declared that before playing classics such as Walking With Thee, The Magician and The Second Line they were going to play Do It!  in one fell swoop. I’m not a fan of that form of gig. The second bit was ace though.
