The reasons for Sunn O)))’s seventh album, Monoliths & Dimensions, being their biggest yet are hard to define. On the surface their sound is roughly similar to what’s gone previously – crushingly held notes swathed in layers of feedback, spreading glacially over time. Sure, there is an orchestra – although the band were at pains to highlight that they weren’t ‘metal with strings’ – and even a choir, but they are sideshows to the main event, artifice to the main ear-aching slab of noise. Couple all this to sumptuous physical packaging, even better than Boris’ Smile from last year, and you have an experience – not just an album. Something different, then.
