Serving as much as a statement of intent as a cracking album-opener, Wild Beasts’ The Fun Powder Plot is the sound of a band confidently lurching towards ‘semi political critique’. As the twisting guitar melodies swirl about you, it is Hayden Thorpe’s aching falsetto (ish) vocal performance that grabs you and doesn’t let go. Not only does it not let it go, you’ll find yourself singing “my boot, my boot, up your asshole” for days – aptly demonstrating the bands new found ability to match whimsy with weight – the song is named after the Fathers 4 Justice parliament protest.
