2009 Best Albums: #30 Franz Ferdinand

December 3rd, 2009

Franz Ferdinand perform at AB, Brussels

This was a long time coming. Four years have passed since the frankly flat You Could Have It So Much Better, and I think a lot of people’s expectations for this album were a tad lower. From the off, though, the band are demonstrating their knack for glorious, sexually ambiguous indiepop. Ulysses in particular is a track that wouldn’t have been out of place on their sparkling debut, all misguided advances and dark corners. Their sound hasn’t changed that much since 2005, maybe a little more bass shows through – but the band have their vim back, the vital ingredient missing from their last effort. Special mention goes out to the awesome Lucid Dreams, a complete departure from anything the band have done previously, descending after four minutes into a dubby electro workout – signs of new life from a revigorated band.
